These questions pertain mostly to the weight loss program. If you
have any questions on the treatment of other neurotransmitter deficiency
syndromes, like fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, migraines, insomnia and the
like, drop me an email or call the office at 952-933-8900
Q. I don’t think I can afford it.
A. Think again. Take a look at your food bill. You will probably eat about a
half or less of what you are eating now. Your savings on food alone will usually
come very close or exceed your bill for the weight loss program. The heavier you
are, the more you will save immediately and in the long run.
In the same vein, you do need to consider buying replacement wardrobe once you
lose the weight. For some people it may end up costing a bundle. If you can’t
afford this you are better off staying heavy!
Q. I can’t tolerate very low calorie diets. I get very hungry, headaches,
irritable, hypoglycemic, belly aches, spacey, depressed, severe food cravings,
etc.
A. The beauty of this program is that while you are indeed eating very little,
the supplements make it possible by getting rid of hunger. Usually within 2-3
weeks on the program we have the doses optimized and you are very comfortable on
the diet. If I could do it myself, then just about anybody can.
Q. I’ll just exercise and lose weight that way!
A. Good luck! A pound of fat on our body has an energetic value of 3500 cal.. An
average person spends 120 cal. running 1 mile. The calculation is simple! Run
about 4 miles a day for a week and you will lose 1 pound! Please don’t
misunderstand: I think exercise is very good for you, it helps your heart and
tones your body, and most people feel better if they exercise regularly, but it
does not help in weight loss in the majority of population.
Q. You don’t really expect me to count all the calories I put in my mouth,
do you? That would be unreasonable!
A. You bet I do! It is quite possible to do, if you know how. You need a good
book of calorie counts, and we can suggest one or sell it to you if you want.
You must know exactly what you eat, otherwise you may inadvertently eat too many
calories. People who don’t count calories end up spending twice as much time
in the weight loss phase of the program. Counting during the weight loss phase
also prepares you for the maintenance phase. It helps you take full control of
your eating habits. We realize that sometimes you may be in a situation where
counting calories may not be an option. That’s OK. If you count 6 days per
week, then just try to be reasonable on the seventh and you’ll do fine.
Q. What about slow metabolism? I think that's my problem. I don’t eat
anything and still don’t lose weight.
A. Excuses, excuses... There really is no such thing as slow metabolism. The
amount of food you need to maintain your weight is easily determined from your
height and weight. You are not any different from everybody else.
The law of conservation of energy states that energy can’t be made from
nothing and does not disappear into nothing. This law has a direct bearing on
this question. We take in energy in the form of food, consisting of
carbohydrates at 4 cal. per gram, proteins at 4 cal. per gram and fats at 9 cal
per gram (there is 28 grams in an ounce). We expend the energy by maintaining
our body temperature. A minor portion of the energy goes to
physical exertion. It is very easy to determine how much energy is needed to
heat up an object of a certain shape and size to a specified temperature. If
your temperature is much lower than 98.6ßF then we can talk about slow
metabolism. However, if this is the case we should also consider the possibility
of hypothyroidism, and we check for that through the lab tests we do with the
physical exam. If this is your problem, then all you may need is a thyroid
supplement and not a weight loss program, and I will be sure to make you aware
of it. In most other cases “eating nothing” usually means eating little
during normal meals and then snacking throughout the day ( and night in some
cases), or eating very small amounts of very caloric foods. One lady told me: I
don’t eat any fat. I only put olive oil in my salad and other meals, and it is
good for you, right? She uses up a large bottle of olive oil per week. Well,
olive oil is pure fat at 9 cal. per gram or 180 cal. per tablespoon... Figure it
out!
Q. Are these supplements safe?
A. We have not seen any long term side effects in people using these
supplements. Occasionally we see some transient indigestion in some people, but
this problem is easily managed and goes away with continued use. Other weight
loss products are not as safe, as mentioned above. Obesity itself is very
dangerous to your health and causes a host of chronic health problems and
shortens your life. If you are on any drugs, like diabetic drugs, blood pressure
drugs, migraine drugs, pain killers for your knees, etc, then we can’t even
compare the safety of our supplements to what you are taking, they are most
definitely safer, and there is a good chance you may be able to get off of your
drugs if you lose enough weight. If you are on antidepressants there is a very
good chance you will get better through the use of these supplements as well, to
the point of being able to slowly decrease the doses and stop some or all of the
drugs. Homeopathy may also come in very handy here.
Q. Will I need to stay on the supplements after I reach my goal weight?
A. It depends. If you are quite heavy it is likely that you will need to stay on
the supplements for a long time after you lose the weight. We consider obesity a
chronic disease, just like high blood pressure, diabetes and the like. Most
people with chronic diseases end up taking drugs all the time. If you have
experienced a lot of struggle with your weight you will probably need to be on
the supplements for as long as you wish to maintain the lower weight. They need
to be looked at just like vitamins, and many people take vitamins daily for
years, don’t they? If your weight is not that high there may be a chance that
you will be able to get off the supplements eventually. We will attempt to wean
you off slowly during the maintenance phase of the program and stop the weaning
process if we see any weight gain. If you are chronically depressed or anxious
or have some other chronic condition and get better on the supplements, then in
all likelihood you will need to stay on them indefinitely unless we cure you
with homeopathy.
